MESIN Forehead Band Design - As appears when worn by the User ( Project : Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
MESIN- Forehead Band Design - As appears when worn as shown in the picture. The prototype can be worn independently or it can rest on the spectacles as shown. The distal ends rest on the ears just like the spectacle's sidebars. All the edges of MESIN are designed as blunt smooth rounded edges to prevent any abrasive injury to the skin. An additional spectacle model with a central camera is planned at the production stage.
MESIN is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based SMART Wearable Device designed to
(i) Continuously monitor, in real-time, the whole process of Medication Administration (from prescription checking to confirm signing of successful administration) and guide the healthcare staff during the whole process;
(ii) remove the need for a second nurse to cross-check thereby reducing the cost of extra nurse-hours for the NHS.
MESIN- Front View (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
MESIN front view displays the central camera. This is a simulated prototype made out of a girls' head-band as the smooth body and a central button as the camera. The front camera watches the Nurse's administration process whilst the AI system integrates with the camera and guides the Nurse with Alerts, Calculations and Action Confirmations. MESIN also responds to a Nurse's commands viz. Confirm, Calculate, Repeat, Reset. The MESIN AI system integrates with the patient Electronic Patient Record ( EPR) and confirms the patient cum prescription details. Also, MESIN alerts for similar patient names in the wards, similar-looking/sounding medications and dose prescription errors. It also calculates the dose for the Nurse on request. At the end of the administration, MESIN confirms successful medication administration by electronic cosigning with the Nurse on the EPR.
MESIN view from the Top (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
MESIN view from the top displays the microphone points ( simulated by a serrated tape) at the rear end where it rests on the ears.
MESION view from underneath surface (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
MESIN view from underneath displays the charging points at the rear end that correlate with the charging points on the docking station. It also displays inner soft padding ( silicone -easily cleanable with soap) intended for comfort against the forehead.
For the simulated prototype building, I used Blue Tack Adhesive for the inner padding simulation and a serrated tape to depict the microphone and charging points.
User Rating Scale -1 (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
The User Rating Scale -1 displays the Usability attributes of the MESIN on the X-axis viz. Usefulness, Reliability, Accuracy and Ease. The Y-axis shows the 7-point rating scale. The coloured legends depict the 6 Users. The numbers denote Users' individual rating score of the attribute.
Scores : 7= Excellent, 6= Very good, 5 = Good, 4= Unsure, 3= fairly poor, 2= poor, 1= V.poor
The majority scored high & positive on Usefulness, reliability, accuracy and ease of use. one participant was unsure maybe because of distress due to an upsetting technical hitch prior to starting the User-Trial. Another was unsure because of the need for robust validation of AI devices in clinical settings.
Verbal Protocol Analysis ( VPA) (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
The VPA demonstrates that MESIN is a highly desirable device with 76.8.% positive comments against 23.1% negative comments. The VPA is a powerful expression of Users’ subjective opinions and hence is a powerful testimonial in favour of the MESIN Prototype Device.
Desirability Word-Cloud based on User-Interviews (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
Desirability Word-Cloud demonstrates that MESIN is a highly desirable device by the Users. MESIN was commended as awesome, interesting, excellent, great etc. The three commonest descriptions were ' recommend it', 'Good design' and 'simple design'.
Design Recommendations Word-Cloud based on User Interviews (Project: Prototype Design and User-Experience Evaluation of the prototype MESIN : Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse To Prevent In-Hospital Medication Administration Errors)
Design Recommendations Word-Cloud displays the following User recommendations on MESIN :
Three major recommendations were Advanced AI functionality in Alerting to medication compatibilities, modified medication doses and periodic update of the British National Formulary. The other recommendations were different colours, anthropometric sizes & memory buttons for trigger words.
Dr. Sridevi Kuchi
Iam a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthesiologist completing my MSc in Human Factors & Patient Safety. My Project is an Artificial Intelligence driven prototype called MESIN - Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse designed to prevent medication administration errors by continuous monitoring in real-time and audio assistance throughout the administration process. The design approach was an inclusive, minimalistic wearable design.
I am a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist employed in a Tertiary Specialist Teaching Hospital with 30y experience in Anesthesia. My work involves clinical administration of Anesthesia, Pain-management, Research, Audit, Teaching both UG & PGs, Human Factors (HF) based Healthcare Service Improvement Projects, running an HF Simulation-based Immersive multidisciplinary Course for Healthcare Staff and HF based innovation. My strengths include an aptitude for innovation & research, meticulousness, analytical, hard-working, structured, enthusiasm for HF based healthcare practices, devotion, good communication, good collaboration and leadership. My special skills apart from clinical care are in Healthcare Systems Analyses, Healthcare Safety Consultations & Review, Healthcare Quality Improvement & Healthcare Innovation. My career aims are to attain Healthcare Leadership in HF & Patient Safety, NHS Safety-related Policy cum Decision making roles and undertake Healthcare-related Innovation Projects. My special career aim is Healthcare Innovation work. Hence I was inspired to design the present prototype MESIN - Medication Safety Intelligent Nurse, an AI-based wearable, fatigue-free, continuous monitoring and guidance system to ensure medication administration safety and prevent patient harm. Based on the User-Trial feedback and personal opinion, with appropriate design modifications, MESIN has great potential for application in community settings as well as for patient self-use.
