Ergonomics and Human Factors

Serious Injury Case - Accident analysis

Example of the analysis of a serious injury case: collision of the motorcycle with a pedestrian due to an obstacle obstructing the view. The upper diagrams show the accident dynamic and the road environment. The causal tree presents the factors involved in the accidents, especially which factors affected the driver's control, the accident dynamic and the accident severity. The bottom indices indicate the confidence in the factors that caused the accident and those which affected the severity - it is based on the quality and quantity of the data collected.

Slight Injury Case - Accident analysis

Example of the analysis of a slight injury case: loss of control of the motorcycle due to oil spilt on the road.

Countermeasures

A number of solutions to prevent or at least decrease the effects of the environmental factors involved in single motorcycle crashes already exist but maybe still under experimentation or put in place in only a few countries. A solution that seems the easiest to apply to counter the danger of safety barriers is to systematically equip the barriers with sub-rails to prevent riders from sliding under the top rail and hit posts. Roller barriers are a type of guardrails that reduces the impact of collisions and directs the vehicle back to traffic - it can be effective for motorcyclists as long as limbs do not snag in the structure. Road markings to help riders to position themselves on curves seems to be an idea easy to apply to warn riders and mitigate their driving behaviours, and there is scope to research always better types of markings. Road maintenance is essential to prevent accidents due to road defects or contaminants - sealing just-formed cracks help to prevent potholes formation.

Yanna Carli

I combine my technical skills with my multidisciplinary knowledge and natural creativity to investigate and solve design and ergonomics issues with the ultimate aim of improving users' and workers' experience.

The knowledge and skills I developed, by myself through my hobbies and during my studies in mechanical engineering and ergonomics, enable me to undertake and adapt to any kind of project in any field. I am indeed interested in a lot of areas (accident analysis, mechanics, industrial design, languages, Art) and I wish to get a lot of experience to eventually find my dream job. In my job, I want to be able to help others by improving their work and life conditions through ergonomics, design and engineering. My main objective is to achieve personal fulfilment in my job.
